ZIPS 'Cleaning' Up Baltimore
Aggressively expanding dry cleaning franchise opens eighth area store;
Offers customers same-day, one-price service
GREENBELT, Md. - ZIPS Dry Cleaners, an aggressively expanding Mid-Atlantic dry cleaning franchise, recently strengthened its Baltimore presence with the opening of its eighth area store. Located at 6102 Baltimore National Pike in Catonsville, the new store looks to quickly become the community's go-to place for dry cleaning with its revolutionary, same-day, one-price business model.
A customer can have any item of clothing dry cleaned for $1.99. It doesn't matter if the item is a necktie, a wedding dress or a pair of pants, the price is $1.99, half the industry average. In addition, garments are cleaned on-site, allowing for same-day service.
"Our goal is to consistently deliver absolute customer satisfaction at a very affordable price point," said owner Bashir Shams, who also owns and operates a ZIPS store in Silver Springs, Maryland. "The fact is that everyone needs dry cleaning in some capacity. The real question customers should ask themselves is, 'Would I rather pay $50-$60 for ten pieces to be dry cleaned, or $19.90 for the same ten pieces and have it done in one day?'"
In today's increasingly "green-conscious" society, ZIPS has also invested in a closed-cleaning system that reduces waste, uses biodegradable plastic bags and recycles hangers.
"Step into a ZIPS for the first time and you know right away this is not your mom-and-pop, no-name dry cleaner," Shams added.
A native of Pakistan, Shams immigrated to the United States in 1972 and eventually found the "American Dream" in franchising. For more than 26 years, he owned and operated seven Burger King restaurants in Mississippi, before selling them and moving to Maryland in 2008. In 2009, Shams sought to make use of his nearly three decades of experience with a new franchise venture. He came across ZIPS and quickly signed a five-store development deal.
He currently owns and operates two ZIPS Dry Cleaners one in Silver Springs, Maryland and the new store in Catonsville and plans to open the other three in Montgomery, Baltimore and Howard Counties by 2017.
"We are extremely grateful for the extraordinary commitment and strength of our franchise community," said Jason Steele, Vice President of Franchise Development for ZIPS. "The commitment to further develop existing territories speaks to the depth of development potential for the ZIPS concept. The contributions and vision of partners like Bashir will continue to play a key role in our long-term growth and success."
There are currently 36 ZIPS stores open and operating throughout the Mid-Atlantic, and Steele estimates there will as many as 100 by 2015. The growth will likely stay on the East Coast, but will push outside of the current footprint in the Mid-Atlantic region.
